Alex,

Do your self a favour and don't go searching for text with a view to 
altering files that as you say you have no knowledge about how they 
work.

Take a more scientific and meaningful approach and as I said download, 
readup on, install !Reporter and then see what it tells you.

If you don't feel like doing that then back up !Boot and use the 
nuclear option of !ResetBoot and start reconfiguring your machine from 
scratch using the menu options and other programme installers rather 
than hand cranking files.

Most of all take some time off from the issue to think and relax as 
that way you start with a fresh and clear mind which always helps.
