The discussions on breeding were interesting and refreshing. Some of us were fortunate to have wonderful, knowledgeable mentors, others learned exclusively by trial and error, many of us studied, armed with limited information available to us. Back when many of us began to breed seriously there wasn't a ton of information out there about genetics. Line breeding, inbreeding, outcrosses meant different things to different folks. We were fortunate to be surrounded by many knowledgeable and astute breeders, Helen (Scootie) Sherlock, Pat Parsons, Caralon GS , Joe and Charlotte Poepping, Bel-Vista GS, Ken Cummingham Sr. and our location , St. Louis, exposed us to frequent shows attended by Fran and Joan Ford, Dave Reinke, Mike Sherman's parents,, the mid-west was a "hot bed" of active, successful breeders. There were 52 bitches shown when we landed our first major on our first homebred bitch - 4 points. We purchased our foundation bitch from the Poeppings, a heavily line bred Hessian Bitch. Bred to Dbl GV Mike she acquired her ROM on her 1st litter. Gosh that was easy, so we thought. Now on our own we learned, It's not so easy!! We admired the style and look of Bernd and what he produced. After attempting to 'stamp' our line with the look we wanted we began to understand the power of blood to blood and type to type. Our Lothario was 7 times Bernd, as we continued down the Bernd path we got the good, and the not so good, i.e. blues etc. We too had to eliminate dogs and bitches from our breeding program who exhibited lovely characteristics but either could not be depended on to reproduce those characteristics OR produced problems we did not anticipate and certainly did not want. How to "bring in " that dog without losing our style. Ah the challenge. But that's part and parcel of the fun , adventure and challenge. My dream is to find a way to have our PC join hands with the Regional clubs located around the country and support, both financially & physically superb educational programs. There are so many great breeders, and believe it or not, they are not all GS breeders, whose experience and results are applicable to all of us. Wouldn't it be great if our handlers, with support from the PC, would offer "Summer Programs" to young, first time handlers. In exchange for room and board these youngsters would pay for their keep by cleaning runs, feeding, learning to groom and handle. They would also go to shows with the handlers. Most handlers could use an extra pair of hands. I would think those young people would grow into the sport with this kind of opportunity.
