Cristy,
    That depends on the mainboard's capabilities as far as how much RAM it 
can hold and what type of RAM it requires.  So, the trick is to look up your 
mainboard and see what the manufacturer says about those details.  If the 
system is custom built, the make/model of the board should be silkscreened 
onto the board itself.  If the system is an OEM product, then the info you 
seek is at the page for the entire system at the maker's site.
