can you give me a quick and easy on copying all my outlook express email to 
my external hard drive (getting paranoid now).

No, I recommend that you reboot and let it launch into CHKDSK now.
Depending on the size of your C: drive, it could take a couple of hours to
run.  Let it do that overnight and it'll be done by the time you wake.
