Hi John

As explained on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitDefender and on
www.bitdefender.com/PRODUCT-14-en--BitDefender-Free-Edition.html, the
free version of BitDefender does not have realtime protection, which is
a must for real protection. It's not a good idea to recommend this
product to normal users. It's useless except to scan the computer if one
wants to make sure one's normal antivirus program has missed something.

Avira's free AntiVir www.free-av.com does scan email, but that is not
necessary because it has realtime protection. That means it will not let
you open up an infected attachment but it won't delete infected emails.
And it's actually an extra benefit that it doesn't go messing around in
your email storage file because that can cause corruption and is the
main reason many people lose all or some of their email.

Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied.
