In my Audel's book, there are several pumps that use a shuttle valve,
but the author generally does not have any good words for them. They
can refuse to start unless the shuttle valve is moved or so he says.
Personally, I like the Worthington Duplexes as they always start and
run. I know where there was a big Duplex that was used as a fire pump
at a sawmill. It was about 12 or 15 feet long and sat in a pit in its
own little building. They decided to take it out one day about 25 years
ago and move it to Memphis, but got only so far as to remove the roof of
the building. Last time I saw it, it was under water because of rain. I
suppose it is still rusting away down in that hole. Sad but true.
There was a smaller duplex in the boiler room of the mill, but it was
removed along with a steam engine that pulled a conveyor that pulled
sawdust to feed the 4 boilers. Only the large twin cylinder
Houston-Stanwood- and Gamble mill engine was still there when they shut
down the mill 20 years ago. The mill engine had a rope drive of 1"
Manila rope. 650 feet of it as I recall. Got some good video of the
engines, pumps and rope drive. Mill is/was located in Bruce Mississippi
in case anyone is interested.
