When I worked in Yosemite many, many years ago someone set a Newfie bitch free
to run with a pack just outside of the valley. For years you could see the
effect - larger, darker coyotes. If you sat on the rocks above inspiration
point you could frequently see her and the pups.
We have lots of coyotes here in Oregon and they will be as bold as needed.
Fortunately there are lots of bunnies int he Christmas tree fields so if you
make the livestock less desirable by having the GSDs around them, they will
stick to bunnies. Remove the dogs for a while and sheep, goats, ducks are all
on the menu.

How's it going, eh
Up here in the Great White North (New Brunswick, Canada) We are over run
with coyotes. These are not those piddly little things that we used to see
on the Disney shows. And I have never met one named Wiley.
As I understand it, these dudes are a cross between a coyote and a timber
wolf and are as big is our German Shepherds. (I have pictures of some taken
on my trail cameras if anyone would like to see them) They have decimated
our deer heards, we have all lost cats. They have cleaned out chicken coups.
Some farmers in our area have lost new born calves and sheep. They have no
fear of our dogs and very little of us humans. They attacted and killed a
woman in Nova Scotia not that long ago. Attacks on humans is becoming more
common. We see them at all times of the day, not just at night. Here on the
Funny Farm, I keep a loaded gun at all times, as do most of our neighbours.
They are out of control.

About three weeks ago, one of my puppies was attacked by a coyote in the
early morning; however, the pup's mom came to his rescue and chased the
coyote off the ranch and almost killed it if I had not called her off. My
ranch is 20 acres and is fenced in with pig fencing. I suspect the coyotes
dig under the fencing to get in. I have never seen them on my property
before but I hear them a lot at night. Any suggestions how to keep them
away?
