The bad thing about this whole story is that you are assuming this critter
didn't run because you had a bitch in season...

Wild animals that do not exhibit normal behaviour could have rabies...and
animals with rabies do not always  foam at the mouth(the typical "hollywood"
rabid animal look)...I had a friend who had a coyote in her drive that her
husband shot that was tested positive for rabies...

Just something to think about the next time one steps toward, rather than
away, from you...
