Re: [PCWorks] A tip for stopping annoying harassing "slide-ups" (a kind of pop-up) immune to pop-up blockers

I see now you beat me to the "that's backwards" statement, LOL.

As for firewalls, I do at times see "ambiguous" messages,
usually at websites with embedded videos. I think it was the
AMA awards site (on TV a few nights ago) and I was checking out
the winners. They have videos at the website and in cases like
that, I've seen strange firewall alerts that list my own local
IP addresses (like 255.255.255.255 and 198.******* which are
local subnet mask host router IP's), and I don't understand why
you don't see that at sites like YouTube. I sometimes allow or
deny those, and if the video doesn't play (i.e. "fails") I have
to do it again. You'll also then see IP's or domains NOT
associated with the website, those I deny, and still if it
won't play you have to try again and allow it.

The obvious ones are when you're not at any website, and you
get some alert (either FW alert or proactive defense from some
kind of security suite like KIS), obviously those you deny. Or
if you're at a website and didn't initiate anything or any kind
of video, you're just reading the page, and you get an alert,
those you deny. When I say "alert" I mean request for access,
that's why you DENY it.

Generally, a FW will do it's blocking without telling you
anything (or most can be set to tell you EVERYTHING). These
are automatic access denies for what they know as not being
legit. I rarely get alerts on mine that require user action.

That's backward, David.
"Deny" protects you.
If some operation seems to then fail, study the message a bit
and it
should become clear if the warning is related.
Cilnt is right in that ambiguous situations are very rare.
Remember, though, that if something really goes awry, it's
Clint's fault.
