Thu,16 Dec 2004 16:20:14 -0600 Since doing this I've found that I have to do
much less dodging and burning. This is what I call abuse of contrast
adjustment. It's very easy to adjust contrast so that wide luminance range
ofthe scene registered in the negative will be printed from pure white to
maximum black. However, by doing so, the local contrast of the important
parts of the image is often too low and the print looks boring. Contrast
control and burning/dodging are different tools with different effects.
Adjusting one so that the need for the other is minimized does not make
senseto me. Of course it requires more work to use both in the most
effectiveway. But if avoiding work is the goal, then you could machine print
or even better go digital. -- Ryuji Suzuki "Keep a good head and always
carrya light camera."

Why do you make this disparagement? I never said that I don't dodge and
burn, and I don't try to cram all detail into the print with soft contrast
just to avoid having to dodge and burn. Less dodging and burning is not the
goal of precisely controlling exposure and contrast, but in my experience it
is one effect of doing so. But apparently my experience is of no account.

How about: "Don't attack people just because they disagree with you."
