This is what I call abuse of contrast adjustment.  It's very easy to
adjust contrast so that wide luminance range of the scene registered
in the negative will be printed from pure white to maximum
black. However, by doing so, the local contrast of the important parts
of the image is often too low and the print looks boring.

Contrast control and burning/dodging are different tools with
different effects. Adjusting one so that the need for the other is
minimized does not make sense to me.

Of course it requires more work to use both in the most effective way.
But if avoiding work is the goal, then you could machine print or even
better go digital.
