Are you ready for the election?  Reservations and questions necessary for Candidates Forum:  AARP and the Greater DuBois Chamber announce a Candidates Forum for Saturday morning, October 23rd from 8:30am to noon.  The location will be the meeting room of Lakeside United Methodist Church at 420 First Street, beside Tannery Dam.  Registration, coffee and donuts begins at 8:30 am with questions at 9:00am.  First on the agenda will be the candidates for US Congress:  Congressman Glenn “GT” Thompson will meet his challenger Michael Pipe.    Then State Representative, Matt Gabler and his opponent Frank Straub will speak.  Mr. Jay Philippone, owner of Priority Communications will be the moderator for the event.  Questions will be prepared in advance – none will be taken from the audience.  If you have issues you feel need to be addressed by both or all candidates, please forward to the DuBois Chamber for inclusion.  The format will provide for timed responses and/or rebuttals to all questions.  Advance registration can be made by contacting  AARP Toll Free at 877-926-8300 or by calling the Chamber at 371-5010, or emailing dacc@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

 

HalloWickedWeen, a new event brought to you every weekend (Fri, Sat & Sun) in October by Scenic View Recreation on Rte. 322 (across from Thunderbird Restaurant).  Lil Goblins Grove, ages 2-10, offers crafts, stories, games prizes and hay rides for only $5, beginning at 6 pm.  For the older crowd, WOODZ of WOE – the Haunted Woods with bonfire, concessions hayrides is open from dusk to midnight for only $7.  Then for one night only – October 29th - a live concert begins at 9pm.  For info, call 265- 9283.

Hospital Avenue Project Update for Week of Oct. 18 –The following information is an update for PennDOT’s Hospital Avenue/Dixon Avenue realignment project in DuBois for the week of Oct. 18. All work is weather dependent.

  • TRAFFIC ALERT: The intersection of South Main Street, Hospital Avenue, Dixon Avenue, and South Main Street Extension will become a four-way stop beginning on Tuesday, Oct. 19. All traffic approaching this intersection will need to stop.
  • The contractor will be paving one lane of Dixon Avenue between Smithfield Street and South Main Street on Monday, Oct. 18.
  • Traffic will be placed on the newly paved lane of Dixon Avenue on Tuesday, Oct. 19 and the contractor will begin excavating for the other lane. Dixon Avenue will continue to be one way until further notice. Traffic will only be able to travel from Smithfield Street to South Main Street. All other traffic will need to follow the posted detour.
  • Murtland Avenue will be closed at the intersection of Dixon Avenue until further notice.
  • The contractor will be preparing to place the final lane of concrete pavement on South Main Street between Grove Avenue and Dixon Avenue.
  • The contractor will continue to form and place concrete curb and sidewalk throughout the project.

·         Motorists are advised to watch for slow moving and stopped vehicles through the entire work zone

The overall project will re-align Hospital Avenue with Dixon Avenue.  Work includes roadway widening, new traffic signals, and improved access to DRMC. The job is scheduled to run through late November of this year.

 

DuBois Business College will be hosting an Open House on Saturday, October 23rd, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  If you have not visited our location at One Beaver Drive, stop by and check us out.  This is a time set aside for the public to meet our faculty and staff and ask questions about programs, financial aid, admissions, etc. Refreshments will be served.

 

An exhibition of photography submitted by students, staff, and faculty of Penn State DuBois will be on display at the Winkler Gallery of Fine Art beginning with a reception on from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on October 23, at the Winkler Gallery.  The public is welcome to attend the open house exhibits, enjoy the art displays, and interact with artists.  The exhibits on campus and at the Winkler Gallery will remain on display through November 30. 

Dinner and a Movie,  Abbas Coffee House,  Community wide event, all ages welcome, come for dinner,  come for dinner and a movie, or come for take-out.  But we hope you will consider coming for fun, food and the wonderful movie, How to Train Your  Dragon ,  Sat eve. November 6.

RSVP of Clearfield County is doing their Annual Make a Difference Day project by again collecting new socks to be distributed throughout Clearfield County.  Last year they collected more than 1,000 pairs of socks!  Let’s raise that number for this year by donating new socks.  If you can help, drop off your donation at the Chamber office or Visitor’s Center in the First Commonwealth Bank Building…and thank you, in advance for your kindness.

Third Annual Murder Mystery Fundraiser is set for Saturday, November 13th at the DuBois Country Club.  This year’s murder involves Lucy, Ricky, Fred and Ethel!  Tickets are $40 per person and can be purchased from the C/J Drug & Alcohol Commission or the Greater DuBois Chamber.  This a unique and different way to spend a Saturday night with friends, so get the gang together and call for tickets – this is a sell out every year!  Proceeds benefit the C/J Drug Free Communities Coalition.

 

The Friends of the DuBois Public Library are sponsoring a basket raffle during the month of  November. Gift baskets will be on display at the library beginning November  9. Tickets will be available for $1.00 each and winners will be announced at 2:00 P.M. on  Friday, November 19. The proceeds of this event will benefit the DuBois Public Library.  If you would like to participate in the event, create a gift basket which includes a book and various items related to the subject of the book. It is also helpful to include a list of those items, For ideas, see an example  on display at the library. Gift basket donations may be dropped off at the library on Saturday, November 6 or Monday, November 8.  

 

Mark your calendars for Saturday, Nov. 20, for the annual Jaycees Lottery at Brady Township Community Center. Tickets are now available from any Jaycee for $30 each or by calling 814.590.1219. Doors will open at 7 with a full dinner for 2 with your ticket entry, and the drawing and fun side games begins at 8 p.m. Our famous Chinese Auction basket raffle is sure to impress again this year, thanks to the numerous community sponsors.
