What a great day for Touch A Truck, DuBois Kiwanis Club, the Tim Britton Sponsored Lego Contest and all the activities at the Mall involved with Scare Fair 2010!  More than 700 children with at least 1,000 adults attended the Touch a Truck event.  Special Thanks to all who took their time to bring a vehicle to the event and share their time for this learning experience for our children.  Thanks to AmServe, Ltd.; Bob Britton Auctioneer, Chapman Auto Parts, City of DuBois Police and Fire Departments; Hallstrom/Clark Electric; Glenn O. Ed Rendell and other partner organizations as they open the doors of Pennsylvania’s Elk Country of the PA WILDS for the Grand Opening Ceremony of the Elk Country Visitors Center on Wednesday, October 6th at 10:30 am.  The center is located in Benezette.  From I-80, take Penfield exit and Route 153 North and turn right at junction with Route 255.  Travel North to Weedville, bear right on Route 555 and travel 9 miles to Benezette.  Turn left on Winslow Hill Rd. and follow signs. 

 

The Free Medical Clinic Annual Dinner Fashion Show is Thursday, Oct. 7, 2010 at the Lakeview Lodge in Treasure Lake.  5:30pm-Basket raffles …  Cash bar; Dinner is at 6:30pm; and the Fashion Show is at 7:30pm.  Tickets are$30.00 each and are available at Jack’s 375-2200; Catherine’s Cache 375-2113; JoAnn Zartman 371-5295; Free Medical Clinic 372-2200.

 

Paint and Play School's fall benefit sale is on Friday Oct. 8 and Sat Oct. 9.   The location is 43 West Scribner Ave.  Rummage sale with bake sale items as well as Breakfast burritos, hotdogs, soda and bottled water etc. will also be available.  The times are 8:00 am to 6:00 pm.

The final Downtown Block Party for the season is scheduled for Friday Oct. 8th from 5-8pm - Fall into DuBois; Fire trucks will be on display (Firemen's Week), food of the season, bobbing for apples, Farmer's Market, Polka Band and demo, live band TBA! This Block Party is the last in the series and kicks off a whole weekend of downtown business shopping specials, sidewalk sales and other promotions.

 

Haven House Shelter will present their annual fundraiser “Performing Hearts” at the DuBois Are Middle School on Friday, October 8th at 7pm.  This is an important event in the efforts to allow the shelter to provide help and assistance to the thousands who have used the facility.  Tickets are $12 and available at the Greater DuBois Chamber, Rosie’s Book Shoppe, or S&T Bank on the Boulevard.

“Dining in the Dark” will be a fun and fund-raising event –also a learning experience-for sighted people to ‘see’ what it’s like to function as one who is blind.  The unique dinner will be held at Aussie’s Steakhouse on Saturday, October 9th at 6:00 pm.  Hosting the evening will be Hank Bloomberg’s Chapter of the PA Council of the Blind.  There will be a presentation at 6:00 pm, Saturday, October 9th, from the members explaining who and what we are, followed by all who are attending donning sleep-masks. The meal will be served at around 6:30. There will a waiver stating that you are responsible for your own laundry and that slips and spills and other accidents can occur while you are blindfolded. Oh yes, Dining in the Dark actually involves eating and drinking while blindfolded. Informal dress ... it could be messy! Hospital Avenue Project Update for Week of Oct. 4–The following information is an update for PennDOT’s Hospital Avenue/Dixon Avenue realignment project in DuBois for the week of Oct. 4. All work is weather dependent.

·         New traffic patterns remain in place on South Main Street. The contractor will continue working in the center lane on South Main Street. Traffic delays are expected. Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes. Workers will be placing the new concrete pavement.

·         Motorists should be alert for changing traffic patterns on South Main Street between Grove Avenue and Dixon Avenue. New traffic pattern will be in effect starting Thursday, Oct. 7 as traffic is shifted onto the newly constructed center lane.

·         New traffic patterns remain in place on Dixon Avenue. Dixon Avenue will continue to be restricted to one lane between Smithfield Street and Hospital Avenue. Dixon Avenue will be one way until further notice. Traffic will only be able to travel from Smithfield Street to Hospital Avenue. All other traffic will need to follow the signed detour.

·         The contractor will continue earthwork and placement of storm-water, drainage pipe on Dixon Avenue in the closed lane.

·         Motorists are advised to watch for slow moving and stopped vehicles through the entire work zone

The overall project will re-align Hospital Avenue with Dixon Avenue.  Work includes roadway widening, new traffic signals, and improved access to DRMC. The job is scheduled to run through late November of this year.

 

HalloWickedWeen, a new event brought to you every weekend (Fri, Sat & Sun) in October by Scenic View Recreation on Rte. 322 (across from Thunderbird Restaurant).  Lil Goblins Grove, ages 2-10, offers crafts, stories, games prizes and hay rides for only $5, beginning at 6 pm.  For the older crowd, WOODZ of WOE – the Haunted Woods with bonfire, concessions hayrides is open from dusk to midnight for only $7.  Then for one night only – October 29th - a live concert begins at 9pm.  For info, call 265- 9283.

 

RSVP of Clearfield County is doing their Annual Make a Difference Day project by again collecting new socks to be distributed throughout Clearfield County.  Last year they collected more than 1,000 pairs of socks!  Let’s raise that number for this year by donating new socks.  If you can help, drop off your donation at the Chamber office or Visitor’s Center in the First Commonwealth Bank Building…and thank you, in advance for your kindness.

The Friends of the DuBois Public Library are sponsoring a basket raffle during the month of  November. Gift baskets will be on display at the library beginning November  9. Tickets will be available for $1.00 each and winners will be announced at 2:00 P.M. on  Friday, November 19. The proceeds of this event will benefit the DuBois Public Library.  If you would like to participate in the event, create a gift basket which includes a book and various items related to the subject of the book. It is also helpful to include a list of those items, For ideas, see an example  on display at the library. Gift basket donations may be dropped off at the library on Saturday, November 6 or Monday, November 8.  

 

Third Annual Murder Mystery Fundraiser is set for Saturday, November 13th at the DuBois Country Club.  This year’s murder involves Lucy, Ricky, Fred and Ethel!  Tickets are $40 per person and can be purchased from the C/J Drug & Alcohol Commission or the Greater DuBois Chamber.  This a unique and different way to spend a Saturday night with friends, so get the gang together and call for tickets – this is a sell out every year!  Proceeds benefit the C/J Drug Free Communities Coalition.

The 3rd Annual DuBois Area Historical Society Spirit of DuBois Lantern Walk ventures into one of DuBois’ most historic areas, the Penn State DuBois Campus and its neighborhood, Saturday, Oct. 16, with tours beginning at 6 p.m. Penn State DuBois, celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2010, is located on what was originally the property of City of DuBois patriarch John DuBois. Admission to the Spirit of DuBois Lantern Walk is $5 for adults and $3 for students, with children sixth grade and younger free if accompanied by an adult. All proceeds benefit the DuBois Area Historical Society. The program is suitable for all ages. Moderator Confirmed for Candidate Forum:  AARP and the Greater DuBois Chamber announce a Candidates Forum for Saturday morning, October 23rd from 8:30am to noon.  The location will be the meeting room of Lakeside United Methodist Church at 420 First Street, beside Tannery Dam.  Registration, coffee and donuts begins at 8:30 am with questions at 9:00am.  First on the agenda will be the candidates for US Congress:  Congressman Glenn “GT” Thompson will meet his challenger Michael Pipe.    Then State Representative, Matt Gabler and his opponent Frank Straub will speak.  Mr. Jay Philippone, owner of Priority Communications will be the moderator for the event.  Questions will be prepared in advance – none will be taken from the audience.  If you have issues you feel need to be addressed by both or all candidates, please forward to the DuBois Chamber for inclusion.  The format will provide for timed responses and/or rebuttals to all questions.  Advance registration can be made by emailing the Chamber at dacc@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx or 371-5010.
