Country in the City is the theme for the First Friday Block Party on September 3rd.  The Downtown Revitalization Group and the DuBois Rotary Club will set up this event on the Main Street end of West Long Avenue from 5-8 pm.  The DuBois Rotary Club will sponsor the Second Chance Chili Cook-Off – to register go to www.duboisrotary.org or call 371-5010.  The band for the evening will be Sam Buck and the Buck Street Boys!

Hospital Avenue Project Update for Week of August 30 – The following information is an update for PennDOT’s Hospital Avenue/Dixon Avenue realignment project in DuBois for the week of August 30. All work is weather dependent.

·         The contractor will be installing waterline on South Main Street between Grove Avenue and Dixon Avenue.

·         The contractor will be excavating and grading South Main Street between Grove Avenue and Dixon Avenue in preparation for paving. This work will be in the lane that is currently closed and will not affect traffic. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained on South Main Street.

·         Motorists are advised to watch for slow moving and stopped vehicles through the entire work zone

The overall project will re-align Hospital Avenue with Dixon Avenue.  Work includes roadway widening, new traffic signals, and improved access to DRMC. The job is scheduled to run through late November of this year.

 

Christmas is coming up before we know it and the  Downtown DuBois Revitalization Group is looking for new members for the Christmas Planning Committee!  If you enjoy the activities of that take place in Downtown DuBois over the holidays and would enjoy having a hand in how the activities are planned and organized, please call Karen Vanderhoff, Downtown Program Manager at 371-30634.  This year's theme is "It's a Wonderful Life in DuBois"  and we are planning an entire month of exciting activities and events for downtown!

 

The North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission is proud to announce the website for the North Central Greenways, www.ncentralgreenways.com

The website was designed as a tool to assist with the implementation of greenways and trails in the North Central Pennsylvania region. It serves as a as a one-stop shop for organizations, advocates, and municipalities in the North Central Region. According to Matt Marusiak, Project Manager for the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission, “in order to have a successful greenways and trails program, it’s important to keep people updated, to receive input from others, and to share our success stories with one another. The website has been designed to allow organizations, advocates, and municipalities to post projects and initiatives throughout the region, providing for two-way communication.”

 

DuBois Regional Medical Center is hosting an American Lung Association “Freedom from Smoking” class to teach people how to stop smoking starting Sept. 7.  Trained facilitators help participants stop tobacco use through eight classes. Attend the first one to see if it is right for you.  The class starts at 6:30 p.m. in the Central Resource Center at DRMC’s west campus. It is the former Central Christian High School building.  Many medications can now help with smoking cessation. These medications are a component of the program. Financial aid for the medications is available for those who qualify.  For more information or to register, call DRMC at 375-3575 or 372-2966. DuBois Kiwanis Club hosts Community Days at Hoss’s on Monday, September 13th.  Twenty percent (20%) of the proceeds benefit the Kiwanis Smoke Alarm Fund – a working smoke alarm is provided to the family of every newborn at DRMC.  Support this life-Saving Project!

 

Haven House Shelter will present their annual fundraiser “Performing Hearts” at the DuBois Are Middle School on Friday, October 8th at 7pm.  This is an important event in the efforts to allow the shelter to provide help and assistance to the thousands who have used the facility.  Tickets are $12 and available by calling the Chamber at 371-5010.

The Friends of  the Library will present “My Uncle Charlie Did What?!!” Genealogical Resources at the DuBois Public Library. Former library director Leah Green will introduce participants to the hobby of genealogy, suggesting ways to begin exploring family history and featuring resources available at the library. Can You Bring a Vehicle to Touch A Truck Day?  This special event for children is scheduled for Saturday, October 2nd  in the parking lot of the DuBois Mall nearest the Hampton Inn.  Glenn O.
