This week is the 2010 Central PA Regional Business & Industry Expo which will take place at the Bryce Jordan Center in State College on Thursday, November 4 from 1:30 pm to 6:30 pm.  The topics and times that have been selected for the nine free workshops available throughout the day.  Some of the topics include: The Ins and Outs of Web Development; First Look at Microsoft 2010; How Going Green Help the Bottom Line and MORE!  

 

PA Wilds is “Cashing-In on Geocaching”- There will be a conference for people interested in this high tech scavenger hunt that explores the connection between tourism, technology and nature.  The conference begins with registration at 9:30 am at the Emporium Country Club on Friday, November 5, 2010.  The $20 fee includes continental breakfast and lunch.  RSVP on or before October 27th to Val Shelley at 814-486-0213 or vshelley@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx or www.pawildsresources.org.  Who should attend?  Businesses, trail group, community leaders – learn how the geocaching craze can benefit you and your area!

Hospital Avenue Project Update for Week of Nov. 1-The following information is an update for PennDOT’s Hospital Avenue/Dixon Avenue realignment project in DuBois for the week of Nov. 1. All work is weather dependent.

  • TRAFFIC ALERTOn Wednesday night (Nov. 3) and Thursday (Nov. 4) during the day, the contractor will be excavating the existing roadway and placing concrete pavement in the intersection of South Main Street, Hospital Avenue, Dixon Avenue, and South Main Street Extension. Traffic will be restricted to one lane through this area while the contractor performs the work. Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes. Traffic delays are expected.
  • The contractor will continue to work on Dixon Avenue. Dixon Avenue will continue to be one-way between Smithfield Street and South Main Street until later in the week when it will be re-opened to two-way traffic.
  • On Tuesday, Nov. 2, the contractor will be installing new concrete curbs on South Main Street between Grove Avenue and Dixon Avenue. Expect minor delays. 

·         Motorists are advised to watch for slow moving and stopped vehicles through the entire work zone. 

The overall project will re-align Hospital Avenue with Dixon Avenue.  Work includes roadway widening, new traffic signals, and improved access to DRMC. The job is scheduled to run through late November of this year.

 

TOYS FOR TOTS DINNER NEXT WEEEK!  The North Central PA Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM), the DuBois Rotary Club, Downtown DuBois Revitalization Group and the Greater DuBois Chamber will hold a benefit buffet for the Toys for Tots program at Luigi’s Ristorante on Monday, November 8th from 5:30 – 7:30 PM. The Friends of the DuBois Public Library are sponsoring a basket raffle during the month of  November. Gift baskets will be on display at the library beginning November  9. Tickets will be available for $1.00 each and winners will be announced at 2:00 P.M. on  Friday, November 19. The proceeds of this event will benefit the DuBois Public Library.  If you would like to participate in the event, create a gift basket which includes a book and various items related to the subject of the book. It is also helpful to include a list of those items, For ideas, see an example  on display at the library. Gift basket donations may be dropped off at the library on Saturday, November 6 or Monday, November 8.

Third Annual Murder Mystery Fundraiser is set for Saturday, November 13th at the DuBois Country Club.  This year’s murder involves Lucy, Ricky, Fred and Ethel!  Tickets are $40 per person and can be purchased from the C/J Drug & Alcohol Commission or the Greater DuBois Chamber.  This a unique and different way to spend a Saturday night with friends, so get the gang together and call for tickets – this is a sell out every year!  Proceeds benefit the C/J Drug Free Communities Coalition.

 

First Step: Starting a Small Business – Workshop each month through December 2010 designed to give you a head-start with your business.  Topics that will be covered during each session:  What to consider before starting a business; License and tax information; Regulations governing a business; Guidelines on how to finance your business; How and why to prepare a business plan; Other resources you can use to help you plan and succeed.  All sessions will be held on Saturday mornings at the DuBois Hampton Inn from 8:30 – noon.  The dates of the workshop is November 13.
