Yes you need to add a new app with a new appliance. But that APP can be created by the appliance manufacturer to take advantage of every feature; that app can be upgraded to add features; and the app is not limited to a few buttons and a numeric keypad.

The other key is that the new appliance be intelligent enough to work with other wireless devices. Infrared communications is archaic. WiFi or Bluetooth are the emerging standard. Just looked at a 3D enabled BluRay player that a friend bought. It has an ethernet port and Wi Fi. This is where things are headed.
