DirecTV 'set to offer over 100 HD channels'

US pay-TV provider DirecTV reportedly aims to offer up to 100
high-definition television (HDTV)channels by the end of the year. The
Wall Street Journal said the satellite broadcaster had spent $1bn on new
satellites and upgraded infrastructure.

DirecTV currently carries 55 HD channels, far more than the 20 to 30 HD
channels offered by cable operators in most US markets.

The Wall Street Journal said cable operators were fighting back against
digital satellite by offering HD programming to their video-on-demand
services, further differentiating the cable platform.

And some large cable operators are looking to squeeze more channels down
the pipe by using technology known as "switched digital video". This
saves bandwidth by only broadcasting channels that are being watched in
a certain area.
