Yes, the new feature in XP allows you to open/close fields without being
erased. You have to use the Eraser icon to clear the fields. No so in
2k...they get wiped the minute you click Protect again.

Follow Dian's advice.  Do not unprotect and reprotect
the document.  I would say your best bet would be to
write your status in another file and copy and paste it
to the form instead of copying and pasting within the
form.

I have very little experience with Word 2000, I went
straight from 97 to XP.  When 2000 came out, I was
given a copy of PPT 2000 as a gift.  As I didn't need
the rest of the suite in 2000, I never bought it.  Ask
me about Word XP, I can answer.  Ask me about 2000, I
can't.  I am sorry for confusing the issue.
