OK...the problem is that in this document there's an option set/saved
that I never use...click Tools/Options/Compatibility and uncheck the
option that select Select Entire Field with first or last character.
THEN you can select words with Ctrl/double click.

Tho, from what you say, it seems there's nothing wrong with it and no
way to "fix" it cuz it's technally not busted...but, I'll send it
