Hi - Kathy here....

I get a little different results, but I also found a possible
workaround...

First, the results with Word XP: When I double click on any word in the
cell in Word XP, it selects everything from there to the nearest end of
the field. That is, unless it was the first or last word, then it
usually selects the whole thing.

Next, the results with Open Office: The document opens as an unprotected
document.

So, next step: I tried unprotecting the document. Guess what? I get the
results everyone else is seeing only if I actually arrow into the field.
(Otherwise, it just replaces the field definition with the text.)

Also - Saw Dian's note and that does work. However, another weirdness is
that in the process of testing I tried a "Tools" ->"Fix Broken Text..."
This caused a death in the process. After recovering the document, Word
let me select a single word, as long as I was in the same field. When I
left the field it went back to the way it was, but the Fix Broken Text
option wasn't enabled anymore.
