Would you at any time have a chance to have a sighted person look at the
images you get from your scans and compare them to the individual pages of
the book they came from. That can sometimes be very informative. Of
course, sometimes the only thing anyone hinks after looking is, "That's
strange." :-) At other times they can figure out what the problem probably
is from the patern of mess and the image.
