Microsoft has said for a long time that serial, parallel and PS/2 ports
were legacy and "designed for windows" computers need not include them

Hardware manufacturers are starting to notice, especially for form
factors (mini/micro/nano itx/atx, laptops) when there is little space to
cram connectors in the first place (and people now want dvi, hdmi,
spdif, 5:1 sound, flash card readers, etc)
