My D70 shows 'R04'
when using RAW (which is my preferred) and 'R09' when using JPEG

Could be an onscreen notification of your mode.
I have a brand new D40, which I have got to get to grips with, so far,
just using the auto modes.
With jpeg fine and a 1 gig card, I get 520 shots.
Now looking into my Digital Photo mags, to learn how to use the manual
modes and RAW.
The other week, at Silverstone, used the auto sports mode, and auto
focus, and had no trouble shooting the cars, either head on,from the
side, or away from me, and only a slightly blurred background, the
cars were pin sharp. Considering they were batting along above 100mph,
I was impressed. I was actually trying to get a blurred background, to
get the impression of speed, by tracking and clicking.
