Am afraid a lot of points in my previous mails where missed or unseen in
an advent to re-emphasize on certain fixed opinions. My suggestion has
always been allow interaction in *local languages*. And, *if* (stressing
this) there are no one to understand/translate/reply a question or post
in a specific language we can seek the help of some lug mailing list for
explaining/translating/answering what the OP is asking for.
The reason for taking Tamil as the case is, Tamil is the local language
for *Chennai* LUG.
LUGs are meant for a location - not a language. Within that location,
depending upon the concentration of special interest groups, they
could have sub-lists (like all Tamil-speaking people of Chennai, or
Asterix users in Bangalore or whatever).
1. In the case of Western countries, the language is not a barrier as
most part of the country speaks similar language. In India, its not the
case as we have 22 languages officially a majority of them are different
from the others. In such case, location is indeed related to language
and vice versa.
2. The purpose of LUG is to help the local community. May be ILUGC has
members from around the globe, but ILUG-Chennai is a local LUG based on
Chennai. Local LUGs are aimed at bringing in the community together in a
specific location.
Both of the points does not infer that *we* are trying to force any rule
like questions should be asked in only one or some languages. This is
just to make a point that we should also welcome local language
interaction and support localization. If we even not allow posting in
local languages then what use in speaking about localization ?
Amen. But you are solving the problem by creating a bigger one
(partitioning LUGs on linguistic basis). Everyone who is knowledgeable
and interesting in participating in Tamil will most certainly sign up
for a ilugc-tamil list.
I thought I was meaning an exact opposite thought. The formation of
mailing lists and lugs based on language is further disintegration of
the existing user groups and is no way going to help any cause. Allowing
use of local languages in mailing list will surely lead to more
participation and interaction of local community, even a wider scope of
people who are well versed and communicative in local language but may
shy away with English.
I feel that I have put forward all the points on my side. Think, as
Ramdhas and Mugunthraj said let us give an opportunity and see. Lets
keep the options wide open, if there is anybody who want to post in
local languages let them. When such a post arrives, those who know that
language might do some contribution in explaining or otherwise
translating the question to English as well as any replies to the post
from only-English speaking part of the community into the corresponding
local language for the benefit of the OP.
I see no further improvement in dragging this discussion to somewhere
else. :) Thanks for all who have voiced their opinions. I will end my
arguments here, others may wish to carry the same and continue
discussing it further. :)
