Justing adding my two cents,
This whole discussion was started from the fact that one new person (?)
to this mailing list was not able to ask what he wanted to ask correctly
or rather completely. If he was ever able to ask the same question he
intended to ask in his own local language, would not he have been more
clearer and complete in what he wanted to know ?
My idea which I have been trying to put forward is, as this being a
mailing list of a local linux user group, should we not encourage asking
questions in local mailing lists ?
The reply can be "why don't we have a separate tamil list to ask the
same?" But, how many of those who are here will be ready to join another
mailing list and participate ? We should rather try to unite resources
than dividing it further in the name of language or anything else.
As a last point, the same issue was brought up by ShriRamdas in
#linux-india and there happened a discussion from active people from
many linux user groups in India. We mostly felt like encouraging people
to ask question in local languages in the existing local lUG mailing
lists itself. The common practice is, a few of us are active
participants or at least memebers in various other lug mailing lists.
So, if we want to pass down or share some useful, interesting or
appropriate info which we encounter in this mailing list, we post them
to other lists as well.
So, this answers the question "what if some one wants to ask a question
in Malayalam or Telugu or Kannada?". We can still forward the person to
appropriate local LUG mailing lists where people can reply in his own
local language *if* we do not have any one in this mailing list
competent enough to answer him in his language.
My opinion is language should be a benefactor rather than a barrier to
share knowledge and being a local LUG we should encourage sharing
knowledge in local languages as well.
