Again am tempted to reply,
1. The entire idea of allowing interacting in local languages is for
people who can interact more comfortably in their local languages and
they wish to do so. We equally respect the other members in this list who
[a] Either have no knowledge of Tamil
[b] Who can read Tamil and understand, but feel interaction in English
is more comfortable for them.
The whole discussion is about allowing/encouraging those who wish to
interact in Tamil.
2. Although we post FOSS related job opportunities in this list, as far
as I know, this is not a job related mailing list. We often come to know
or ourselves have some job opportunities related to FOSS and we share it
with others in this mailing list.
3. We do encourage students to improve their English, but if they really
want to improve their skills they should do some home work before asking
it. Home work as in looking at the archives or active threads in this
mailing list, learning from the way each one of us ask questions and
answer them, learning from how the discussion proceeds and what is the
way to ask a question that it fetches positive replies than leading to
being flamed.
When I joined this list some 4 years ago, the guy who introduced
GNU/Linux, FOSS as well as ilugc to me had only one advice/suggestion to
offer - "Do not post to the list right the first day, if you have not
ever posted to a mailing list. Watch the threads and how people interact
for a week or so, learn how to ask question and how to answer them
before you yourselves posting one". I just followed it and I think I
have improved a lot, my way of interacting through mails.
At the same time, there were many instances of newbies asking really
dumb question such that we can not understand as well as they can not
understand our replies, and many of them have got flamed and ran away.
This is also one of the reason, although the list has a huge subscriber
base still a very few participate or ask questions.
Thats why we (a few of us feeling that we should allow interaction in
local languages) feel that we should also encourage interaction in local
languages. Also, we can use local languages to actually help them to
improve their English as well ;)
