Howdy,

About setting up your own test site. I _think_ it might not be a good
idea to start having copies floating around of the data. The reason is
that it does contain sensitive material (privacy-wise).

Not sure what you mean here, you mean in terms of knowing the current set up
and how it can be compromised?
I wouldn't think I would need user account data itself.

Other thing: I think the website port should be a group effort, but
the current array of communication tools is inadequate. I have a list
of all the modules we need for drupal 5. I would like to publish this,
but I don't know where, since it is a potential security problem.
Security through obscurity, right :-). Now I'm a big fan of project
management tools, and I'd prefer to use basecamp
(http://www.basecamphq.com) to plan and execute this operation. But of
course, if there is a less drastic way of keeping our secrets, then
I'm all open for suggestions.

Actually, something like is more in line with my thinking. I'm questioning
the lack of SSL though for free users, but maybe that would be overkill for
what we are doing anyway.

 1. The problem with the gallery in IE6 is not the only occurrence
of this
problem. There are several articles that do this in IE7.
What is 'the' problem here?

Well, not the current gallery. The one being worked on by Remi.

Maybe this was fixed by now. I've had articles that drop down below the
boxes like that as well. I'll see if I can track one down.

I think you are referring to the fact that wide graphics placed in the body column can overlap with the right side column boxes when the browser window is not wide enough.

If that's the case, then yes, this is a problem with the current theme; at one point (a long time ago, I tried to fix it, but we never able to (lack of skills). The brute force way to do it may be just wrapping the main content in a table. We could try this hack at least as a temporary measure.

 2. IMHO the development section isn't in the best format for
developers.
It feels too bloggish. While I understand part of the issue is that
content
also needs to added and improved, the current set up just doesn't
feel
right. Definitely eats up too much paper if you print documents
directly
 from the site.
Even with the 'print' button used?

I'm not a fan of the current font size or type. But maybe that is a bit of
heresy on my part considering the Be-Newsletters appear to be in the same
format. Another counter argument against me is that both Firefox and IE7
let you resize the page. Although, the coding guidelines can be confusing
depending on what browser you use since the formatting changes accordingly.
Personally I think there should be a pdf file for the guidelines.

Well, if somebody creates a PDF for the coding guidelines, we can certainly make it available online.

 3. In general, I feel that some of the site layout needs
improvement.
Perhaps some use cases need to be developed.
Are you talking about 'screen layout' (how the screen is structured),
organizational layout (how the site is built up) or visual layout (how
the theme looks)?

Some I would say is screen layout, more organizational layout. With the
exception of the banner, from a visual layout it feels more bloggish than
anything else. Maybe I just need to upgrade my hardware and run in higher
resolution. :P

That may help. Please note that while we strive to target as many users as possible, our website stats do show that an overwhelming majority of visitors use high resolution graphics.

Now I envision a stage where we might get a developers.haiku-os.org
website, but not right now. I also don't think that it would be a good
idea to change the theme of the website based on the location you are
in at that point. Let's keep that for when we do an actual release.

Alright, again maybe my issue is more related to content than anything else.
I have been developing some ideas for that, but it will take some time.

Can you share with us a snapshot of our ideas and their objectives?

Cheers,

Koki
