Diane -- I've been following the discussion of the Review with interest.
We used to advertise in the Review years ago,and I always had fun making the
ads. The "just before the National" Review has always been dedicated to
promoting wannabe Selects (Used to be something like,"Watch for Rocky with
his handler Fifi in the red mini-skirt"). I've always wondered how effective
that sort of thing really is. Regardless, it's fun to observe. After the
National the Review will be very thin again. Alas, we're a shrinking tribe.
The ads in the Review really have gotten fancy shmancy. Somewhere awhile
back people started copying the fancy all-breed magazines which have always
been that way. Full of color and very expensive. People pushing the latest
greatest Puli (or whatever) as a group and BIS dog realized that pedigrees
were irrelevant to most of the viewers, especially the group and Best in
Show judges that their ads were targeting. As for the Review these days, I
like the color pictures of the dogs, but I think artsy fartsy graphics
accompanying them are sometimes over the top. I'd prefer a full pedigree.
I was really happy to read what Linda Bankhead said about interviews in
upcoming Reviews. I did an extensive interview with Peggy Douglas in the
Review after she judged the National, and it was very well received. People
always like to read judges' comments about specific dogs and the state of
the breed in general, and we need more of that type of thing in the Review
every month.
