Shoulder assemby involves several factors controlled by different genes, some
of which are recessive. The gene for correct shoulder angulation, for
instance, is a recessive. So is the gene for long, reaching gait. It would be
nice if both the sire and the dam brought these to the party along with long
upper arm and other pieces of the genetic puzzle. Most of the traits
associated with a nice head are dominant. This information can be found in Dr.
Claudia Orlandi's book The ABC's of Dog Breeding. It was also cited in the AKC
Gazette Nov 2006 issue.

trait, say strong heads, than it is to pick up another like good shoulders.

Zane,
I admire & respect your passion & opinion, but I disagree with you.?? I think
our breed has lost a lot of the sidegait that is what sets the breed apart from
others.? Our standard emphasizes movement - We are not a head breed.?? While
our standard does?mention secondary sex characteristics, motion is certainly
the emphasis and trademark of our breed as discussed in the standard.?
Also - keep in mind, it is much easier to improve a "head piece" in 1 or 2
breedings.? Much much harder to improve good movement or shoulders.?
Please note - I am NOT saying judges should award the best moving dog every
single?time regardless if a male has a bitchy head.??? However, I think that
sometimes those who think they are recognizing the "total package" are actually
choosing mediocrity because the animal supposedly doesn't have any visable
faults.?However, poor movement is a serious fault in our standard.?
Regarding the quality of the puppy classes, I have an opinion about this.?? At
this years National I noticed in one of the male puppy classes that most of the
entry looked like Open dogs.? Maybe that is why those dogs looked good to you,
not sure.? However, I see this as a problem.?? I think we have a big problem
with people wanting a finished polished product much?earlier.? I think it's the
American way like everything else.?? People don't want to wait for something
good, they want it now!? LOL?
So, we end up with these huge mature adult-like puppies in the 6-9 or 9-12
classes, but take note of most of them at 3, 4 or 5.??They are overdone and
can't move because?they matured way too fast.? ?That is partly why we have a
lack of motion in the breed right now.??

JMO I think that since I have started showing and going to the nationals the
quality every year has gone done down!!!!!!! The only thing that seemed to
improve was the puppy classes. Some of the GSDs that placed at this years
nationals were not my taste at all!!!!! But then again I was not the Judge.. I
do believe that people are putting so much emphasis on SIDEGAIT and not the
TOTAL DOG!!!!!!!!

On the topic of Head Piece:

I absoutely HATE snipey heads of dogs or bitches. I much rather have a big
headed bitch or a snipey headed one. Has far as males I want a Strong head like
that dog "RENO" that dog is all male.
