Mount Pisgah location, crossing bridge turning north and parking. Walking on
Frank Parrish Road to gate at river. Then back tracked and walked further
north.
Found a female Western Tanager carrying a fat beetle (?), probably to its
young. This breeding female was bright yellow throughout its underparts.
Migrant female tanagers in the valley seem to have less yellow, predominantly
gray, with yellow under tail coverts and yellow throat, but with wide variation
in this combination, with few being solid yellow below. We then checked out the
LCC ponds where we found the Hooded Mergs.
Birds still singing include robin, towhee, Bewick’s Wren, sapsucker, bunting,
chickadee, Warbling Vireo, Pewee, junco, Song Sparrow, House Finch, and both
goldfinches. Heard no song from Black-headed Grosbeak. Tanager not heard
singing, but probably still at it; same with Purple Finch.
