I see that my reasoning is as garbled as my syntax. I wrote

'My wife came back in, turned on CNN, and saw the images of the burning towers and of the chaos in the adjacent streets.'

I then go on to wonder if I was already watching TV, etc.

Argument to the best hypothesis is clearly that I was still in bed and she had to wake me, so there can be little doubt that 'I was in bed (at the address given)' is the right answer, in my case, to 'Where were you...?'
