It's surprising what we selectively see, in our everyday travels. Over here I'm struck by the scenic devastation that the Forestry Department have caused. We overlook Sky Hill, scene of the final battle between Manx and invading Vikings. You couldn't have a conker fight there, now, as it's almost wholly covered in conifers. My understanding is that the Island didn't have conifers before our government employees unilaterally decided to plant them.

On the other hand I was surprised at what I wasn't seeing. When Tony Meredith was putting together the tree AG coverage for ES's version of IOM, I reported that there were quite a few places where his trees weren't there in real life. A trip out with the camera had me eating my words. I go over the mountain most weeks and had never realised there were roadside plantations in a couple of places, close to the road, beyond the Gooseneck. How can you miss a plantation, without taking foreign substances? I guess I'd programmed myself to it being treeless up there Wrong! Even now, they don't really register, as I belt along.

Having flown around the Hebrides I agree that there aren't many trees there

a few copses of conifers around - part of the forestry planning of recent
years to harvest these quick growing trees. Like most schemes there are good
points to the enforced plantations but they aren't without problems either -
once harvested the ground is so acid nothing grows on it. You can see this
here too.

It's different in Ireland as they still have forests over there. Go down to
Killarney or Lake Ross and you can walk through miles of oak trees as noted
during Queen Victoria's visit to the Gap of Dunloe. It could definitely
benefit from treescaping as much as the UK did.

Not the same AG. Treescapes is from Earth Simulations and the UK VFR
site creator Darren but was done in a different way to earlier efforts.
My understanding is that he created an image recognition programme that
identified wooded areas and planted trees thereon. That made it possible
for him to get remarkably good coverage of the GenX areas.

The downside is that areas he hasn't yet covered, like the new Ireland
photoscenery, now look awfully bare. Actually I'm not sure there are all
that many wooded areas over there. Same with Western Isles, Orkneys and
Shetlands.

The only problem I've had with Treescapes relates to the farm strips.
Often the trees used are of a size that doesn't accurately reflect
what's there in real life. From the air that doesn't matter but in the
case of a strip it can be crucial. I spent about a week pruning, so all
the strips on my setup remain flyable.

His Shawbury fields places his AG buildings throughout Shropshire.

The main AG Tree planter used to be Ray "Shep" Sheppard. I think he had
a slight stroke, last year, and haven't heard much of him of late.

This was one of the more successful developments by the UK VFR Project
website and although they never got complete UK coverage the work done was
still impressive. I've just found the IoM files I submitted for the
project
but they needed reworking because all the trees defaulted to conifers.
AgenT
should have sorted this out but that's when the PC died and I never
finished
the work.

Oddly enough I've just found the UK VFR Library PDF showing all the 3D
objects Darren build and it's a sobering reminder just how many cars,
ships,
houses and general objects he made. It's a shame the UK VFR site closed
down.

Now Treescapes is definitely worth having. I used not to be a fan of
Autogen, the MS version, but Treescapes is one of my better buys.

Yep - it doesn't really sound that exciting so I'll check the website to
see if there is any compelling reason to think about buying it.

I saw Treescapes on the Earthsim site yesterday so will have another
look.

I should have added that v3 is 'nice but not necessary' as you have the
v1 -2 upgrade then v3 would require a new purchace of the complete set,
I'd opt fot EarthSim Treescapes instead, far better valur for money!

v3 adds a new higher (60cm) resolution to some areas and a few
models of some well known landmarks.

I suspect the v2 disks are the free upgrade. I've just opened
both sets for the first time and whilst the v1 cases all have
product registration cards in them the v2 sets don't.

It seems odd opening them after all this time - they've been
stuck away for years - and it might also surprise Horizon when I
activate them after all this time.

I didn't know a third version was out so can I ask why? What
have they done to make v3 necessary?

You only need V2, it came with night lighting and FS2004 on it
which were absent on v1. I never purchased v1 so it is clearly
not needed. If you have v2 because you were an original v1 buyer
then v2 was issued free, if you purchased v2 then you qualify
for the half price v3 upgrade.

If I recall correctly, the difference between v1 and v2 was
night lighting and improved water masks (?)

Not absolutely positive about this, but I think the version
1 came in 2 flavours, FSX and FS2004, but they got the
updates onto a single set. I guess you need to install the
version 1, followed by the updates.

              This all happened years ago............

There's been rumours of FSX11 coming later this year, I
guess you will be getting that going in another 7 years
time, I'm reminded of the 2 Ronnies sketch where they did
Mastermind, with the answers lagging one behind the
questions!

Digging through the box of DVD's I have for FS reveals quite
a few scenery disks and my suspicion is that many can go
straight in the skip. Before I do so can I check that I'm
not throwing away the wrong boxes?

First is the four box set of Visual Flight photo scenery -
John's original release. I assume this was replaced or
improved by Horizon GenX and that it isn't worth installing.

Next is the Horizon scenery but it is puzzling me. I seem to
have the original GenX three disk set but the boxes say this
is for FSX only. I also have the GenX V.2 disk set which
claims it is compatible with FS2004 as well as FSX. If the
latter is true then I see no reason the install the original
set and should also throw the original GenX DVD's away too.

Is this correct or are there any solid reasons for
installing the Visual Flight scenery again or the Generation
              X V.1 scenery?

As to flight sim itself I presume there isn't any problem
installing FS2004 and then FSX -or would it be better doing
it the other way round? I seem to recall the FSX install was
reported to mess up any FS2004 links..
