i am afraid your 'vast majority' consists of less than 20 subscribers out
of the approx 1500 that are subscribed to this list. i made an open call
in the list to express a preference and less than 20 people have asked for
reply to munging to be turned on (and an even smaller number have asked
that reply to munging not be done). pedantically, reply to munging should
not be done. practically, reply to munging may be more useful. since so
few subscribers are expressing a preference, i will go with pedantics over
practicality.
IMHO, the active part of the mailing list should be considered rather
than considering the total mass. If an analysis is made over the mailing
list, around 30-40 people might be posting per month in the mailing list
and the even in that 10-15 might be the ones who are pretty much active
and post everyday at least a mail (am on the border of this category),
even though there are 1500 people who have registered with the list.
When a practical issue is being considered, such as reply-to munging,
where the practical problem is faced by *routine* participants of the
mailing list, considering the totally inactive and non participating
mass of the mailing list is not welcomed. The rest 1400 (taking the
count to be around 100, as usual participants) have no contribution to
the mailing list other than making the numbers to 1500. The
mere-onlookers are *not* affected by the problem faced (not having
reply-to munging) by a majority of the participants and especially a
majority of the active participants.
So, saying "*only* 20 people out of 1500 in the mailing list is asking
for reply-to munging" is not appropriate. It is *20* people out of the
normally active/participating 20-30 people of the mailing list, whose
interaction with the mailing list will be further improved if their
request is satisfied. Else, the sailing continues as usual, with a bit
of pain in the fingers.. ;)
