I don't think that munging "reply-to" header is requested unanimously. I
know several other people on the list who don't want "reply-to" header
munging (like me). They are in silent mode because they are tired of the
flame wars in the past on this topic.
I think that the user's freedom of selecting what should be done about
his reply should remain intact. Also the poster's choice of "reply-to"
field should be maintained and passed on. A lot of mail clients do have
the option of "Reply list". When given an option to deal with things in
the front-end level, why to have a workaround at the mail headers?
Without any intention to renew this ever-continuing issue, I like just
to put my thoughts again.
If a person A joins Mailing List, then he is entitled to post to the
list. Anything he asks will be to the list and it goes to all the
members of the list. In return, the members post their replies to the
list, which goes to the person A and everyone in the list. I know this
is the normal procedure, but what I mean to point here is that the
intention of the mailing list is to share both your questions as well as
your ideas/replies with the community, i.e. the mailing list.
So, by default you are expected to send the mail to the mailing list.
But, sometimes you may need to go off the list and communicate
personally. When you are in personal communication, then it falls out of
the 'mailing list' activities and its your personal thing.
Hence, the mailing list should have 'send replies to the mailing list'
as the default practice, while a person wishing to mail someone
personally has to go off the list, i.e. it is his pain in the fingers to
type the email id of the person whom he wishes to mail personally.
Thus, 'reply-to' munging is to be implemented, to make sure all the
replies do come to the mailing list. Anyone wishing to go off the list
and mail people personally, still has the freedom to do so, without
affecting the default practice of mailing the mailing list.
P.S. Hope this doesn't add fuel to the quenching flames :D
Urgh, You knwo what happened ? I am actually sending (forwarding) this
