I think your thinking is akin to reasoning that "even though the
opposition candidate won, since the turnout was 35%, we will declare
the incumbent as the victor as he/she is more qualified to hold the
post".
I could suggest a couple of things:
1. Slightly more formal referendum-type voting for the list's
collective majority view. I'm not sure if mailman can do that, but I
think other MLM software can handle polling (Yahoo groups has the
poll feature). It could be a feature available as a plugin or
something to mailman. This has to be done in a way that each
subscriber gets to vote only once.
2. Since October 1st is around the corner, we could do a one-month
trial of "Reply-To set to list" during October, and revert/continue as
per discussions/feedback on the list during the month on 31/10. This
might be preferable since most list members are not stepping forward
to express their opinions.
