[Ilugc] swap needed or not ?

A few years ago, I had access to two unique boxes that
is worth mentioning:
64 CPU SGI, 32GB RAM, 50TB disk and 512MB (yes it's MB)
swap. The swap partition was there just to keep the OS
and config tools happy and was never used.
8 CPU Alpha, 8GB RAM and 4GB HDD. When we ran out of HDD
space, we created a RAM disk and stored files on it!!
Ofcourse the machine was never rebooted. This continued
for a few months, until an infrastructure upgrade brought
us more disk.
It's true that the world down-under is really upside down.
