[Ilugc] swap needed or not ?

have heard reports saying that one does indeed need it, howmuch  
ever physical RAM  u have, as it considerably improves performance.  
how far is it true ? swap partition of what size could be made for  
maximum performance of the OS ?

swap slows things down - even if you have a swap partition, keep it  
off until your system slows down - even with 512 MB RAM i keep swap  
off until the ram is really overloaded

does the thumb rule of 2 x PhysicalRam hold true here also ?

1 x physical RAM is best
