i think that almost the opposite is needed. anything that can generate
control output has a "gesture" <something>. if the <something> is
enabled, then until it is disabled, all other control changes are part
of a single gesture. anything that has control inputs has a gesture
<something>. while it is enabled, all control changes are part of a
single gesture.

its up the user+host to connect these two <somethings> together in
useful ways.
