Hello again, Debby!

Mayrie will likely have a better, more comprehensive description, but one word of caution. Only delete blank pages if they do not affect present page numbering. Also, if you leave them in, number them (with protection of blank line above and below) and then add on its own line:
[blank page] and another blank line above the page break.

Keep in mind, many blank pages are not actually blank, but images not seen by screen readers. If you are concerned by the number of blank pages or references to potential images, there are several sighted volunteers like Cindy, Jamie in MI, and myself and others who are glad to try and check it out. In those cases, you can add a bracketed description or write:
with the same protocols as above.

HTH!
Valerie

Hi Mayrie!

Thanks for such a helpful message.

I am proofreading with Word 2000 and I am a Window-Eyes user. I noticed the page breaks and there were two or three blank pages at the very beginning of the book, so I deleted them.

That was very helpful about going to the last page to have a number to ad preliminary pages to.

I read the Scanning and Proofreading Manual as well as the Volunteer Introduction, so I just needed your assurance that I am on the right track.

Hi Debby,

Word will tell you where page breaks are, either visually, if you can see, or auditorily if you are using a screen reader. So, if you aren't seeing page breaks, you might need to tell us more about what your software
is, and whether you are using any adaptive software and what that is.

Don't worry that bookshare's tools disagree with the page count. The book won't be rejected if the number that you get and the number that the tools get are not the same. Bookshare's tools don't always seem to count well unless pages are numbered with arabic numerals, so get confused about preliminary pages. The best way to be certain about the proper number of pages in a book is to find the number of the last page in the book, and add the number of preliminary pages to that number. That will give you the
total number of pages.

If I haven't answered your questions sufficiently, please, ask
again. Also, you might find the scanning and proofreading manual a helpful resource as you figure out all of the vagueries of proofreading. And we're
always here to help you out!

It's great to have you with us!

Mayrie

Hi Lori, Cindy and everyone!

I just started proofreading a book for the first time today as I just signed
up for volunteering yesterday.

It seems like a bit of guess work in determining where a page is exactly before the page numbering in the book starts. Do I just make my best guess? Also, when I loaded the book into word, I discovered there were a few more pages than what is the number of pages in the book information page. If the number doesn't come out to be exactly the same as what is given in the book
information page in the end, will the book be rejected?

I'm proofreading "Love on Its Knees" by Dick Eastman, and thoroughly
enjoying reading as I proofread.
