I was unable to reply to a request for directions to Standifer Gap Marsh. It is in Chattanooga, on Standifer Gap Road, between Hickory Valley Road and Shallowford Road. From I-75 take the Shallowford Road Exit and go west (left if you are coming from downtown). Cross Lee Highway and continue to the next traffic light, Hickory Valley Road. Turn north (right) on Hickory Valley Road and go about a half mile to the next light, Standifer Gap Road. Turn west (left) on Standifer Gap Road. It is about a half mile to Living Covenant Church (friendly owners of the marsh) and the marsh. Turn right on the new, un-named black top road close to the church. The marsh will be on your left. Walk across the flat bare red clay to the edge of the marsh. There are fewer remarkable birds there now than there were last spring. Any rails or bitterns are most easily seen by walking along the edge of the water, for which boots are recommended.
