Standifer Gap Marsh, Chattanooga, Hamilton Co., TN February 24, 2005 Pied-billed Grebe Wood Duck 4 Gadwall 40 Canada Goose 5 Mallard 10 Northern Shoveler 8 American Coot 50 Virginia Rail 5, vocal, at least 2 giving 2-note "mating call" Common Snipe Sedge Wren, usual location in tall grass/rushes at south end Silent, wary. I haven't seen Sedge Wren since Jan 3. I believe today's Sedge Wren has been there all winter, rather than returning early. The tall grass/rush area is 5 or more acres, this bird could easily hide, and in cold weather probably doesn't respond to recorded calls (which I didn't use today).
