Standifer Gap Marsh, Chattanooga, Hamilton Co., TN March 28, 2005 Mallard: Some animal destroyed the nest with 8 eggs which I reported March 21. The shells are scattered. I found a similar newly destroyed nest about 200 feet away, with the shells more widely scattered. Virginia Rail: Flushed 3 or 4, heard others, despite the cold and wind and a very short wade. Found what appears to be a beginning nest a few feet from where one flushed, and very close to an early nest location last year. Since we found young rails in early May last year, this is about the correct time for nesting.
