American Bittern ?, one short view as it flew out of sight,
heron shaped, brown, larger than Green Heron
Least Bittern, 2 sightings, most likely 2 different individuals
both flew to the cattails north of the fence

Wood Duck, 9 male, 3 female

King Rail, good long views at usual location, west end of ditch
watched it make the quack, quack, quack call which
resembles a sound the Virginia Rail frequently makes
but louder and deeper (Virginia on steroids?)

Virginia Rail 5, Sora 2

Killdeer, the nest the TOS group found on May 1 still had 4 eggs
May 14; today just 1 young bird remained in the nest,
looking too weak to walk; parents were even more agitated
than usual, the other 3 young are likely OK and running around

Blue Grosbeak, 2 females 1000 ft apart

(** Rose-breasted Grosbeak, 1 female every day at home feeder
in Ooltewah every day for a week, last day 5/12/04)

Bobolink, 2 sightings of a female flying and landing,
  likely different individuals

Standifer Gap Marsh, Chattanooga, Hamilton County, TN
5/17/04 8:00 - 10:00 AM
