After a search on the web I discovered that Windows 2000 Pro (which is the version I have in VPC) has an application called Task Manager that will force quit apps. I found Task Manager on my system, opened it and proceeded to terminate several instances of mmxsitessc.exe that were listed as running. After that I was indeed able to shut down Windows and go to bed. I like it when things work out that way!
