Not necessarily.

Well, yes. The GOP is an alliance between two political groups who have opposite interests. It's big corporate owners on one side and small-town white Christians on the other. The corporate owners put up the money for the elections and the Christians vote in sufficient numbers.

They are ALL about keeping their costs low and not a care in the world about
the illegal or legal immigrant as a PERSON.

Precisely. The large corps are all about reducing costs in order to maximize profits.

worried about living wages for ALL (illegal AND legal immigrants and
Americans.

A week ago, Eric talked about having once worked as a dishwasher and how that was honest work. Yes, it once was, back when honest work was sufficient to provide for a living.

But McJobs (fast food, hotel maids, farm work, etc.) don't pay a living wage anymore. 25 years of GOP have keep wages down, stripped away the benefits, and broken the unions. Barbara Ehrenreich's "Nickled and Dimed" describes quite well what it's like to be in minimum wage jobs: you sink slowly, never to move up.

The American Dream once was to do a good job and have a decent life. Now, the American Dream is to win the lottery or win at online poker and be rich and famous, like Donald Trump and Paris Hilton. Decent work is for chumps.

We need a return to Rockefeller Republicanism, a centrist GOP, that accepts social responsiblity as part of capitalism. The current GOP velociraptor capitalism is not good for anyone. But centrists are quite out of fashion these days.

Someone wrote (I think it was in Harpers) that it's quite an irony that the GOP is made up of anti-Darwinists (i.e., the evangelicals) who feverently believe in Social Darwinism (survival of the fittest).
