Amen. But you are solving the problem by creating a bigger one
(partitioning LUGs on linguistic basis). Everyone who is knowledgeable
and interesting in participating in Tamil will most certainly sign up
for a ilugc-tamil list.
I too agree with the point, language expertise in LUGs should be considered
as an advantage rather than disadvantage.
Even as you say this list should be location based not language based, the
fact is chennai is the capital city of a state where tamil is official
language. We cannot deny this fact/reality (seperating the states on the
basis language itself may be a debatable subject for some - thats beyond our
lists scope).
Having expertise in local language in linux users group will definitely help
spread of the FOSS/linux in that locality. For example chennai LUG has been
very helpful in ELCOTs efforts to adopt linux in TN govt offices recently.
The tamil expertise our LUG members possesed have very much contributed for
that.
We all want the benefits of Freesoftwares to reach the comman man. And the
local linux users group can contribute lot to make that to happen by having
techies who know local language well ( who can put their technical thoughts
across in local language).
Also there is no need to have a seperate list. May be we can use some tags
for languages. Like [tamil] when we send mails in tamil. Those who send mail
in tamil are very well aware of the fact that their questions will reach the
tamil knowing members only. And the responses also will be limited to those
coming from those groups. So that should not be problem for others. Others
can put a filter and skip those messages based on the tag.
Also I would say we should not limit this to Tamil, if we have members with
other language skills it would be a advantage for Chennai LUG to have
mulilingual technies :) And we might even help other state governments in
their local language IT efforts.
