George, Does that mean that the help and other documentation should be available in XML? ______________________________ J. R. Westmoreland PacifiCorp I/T Telecomm Data Communications Phone: (801) 220-4784 -----Original Message----- From: duxhelp-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:duxhelp-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of George Bell Sent: Tuesday, June 01, 2004 1:22 PM To: duxhelp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [duxhelp] Re: Password Protected Documents Hi Jack, Trust me. Hard copy documentation of one kind or another is extremely high on my own priority list. However, I do have to write Help based on the final code. And at the present moment, some areas are a rather moveable feast, and so the actual completion Help is, as always in any software development project, the last task to be done. And to explain a little further for everyone's benefit. The Help files as they stand, are in fact a compilation of over 600 individual HTML files, which are called "Topics". When you select "Emboss" from within Help, it is in fact invoking DBT's HTML importer, and outputting via your selected default Template and Embosser. The software we use to create the Help files is very specialist. One of its capabilities is to produce printed documentation as Word files, which in turn are a good basis for producing a printed manual. Word 2003 of course now provides a facility to save these files in XML, and for those who are into XML (and may groan at Word's version) this is a major step forward. The bottom line is that it will technically now be possible to produce documentation is various formats, though I have to say that given the current targets, this may not be completed on release. But we will do our very, very best. George. -----Original Message----- From: duxhelp-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:duxhelp-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Jack Maartman Sent: 01 June 2004 20:03 To: duxhelp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [duxhelp] Re: Password Protected Documents And fine help files they are. I think it would be good for the on-line help to be put in a series of .dxp files to compliment the .chm files. Don thinks Windows perhaps even 98 ships with a utility to convert .chm to html files, which could then be saved as text. In my experience, having both downloadable and on-line help do rather compliment each other. The problem with the on-line help, and no reflection on George, is acidentally exitting the help program and trying to find my place again. I'm thinking this shouldn't be difficult as the end result has to be compiled into .chm files.
