I will consider you caught in the grips of the same ideology as Stuart if you 
believe your CD player can appreciate the music it plays in the same conscious 
subjective sense that you can appreciate it.

I think you will agree it cannot.

Your CD player can have no conscious appreciation of music because it does no 
more than manipulate symbols according to their shapes, i.e., it does no more 
than perform syntactic operations over formal elements. 

It cannot understand the meanings of the musical notes for the same reason the 
man in the room cannot understand the meanings of the Chinese symbols: syntax 
by itself is neither constitutive of nor sufficient for semantics.
