When I mentor new Judges...I tell them that seeing the dog on a loose lead is truly next to the most important thing about judging this breed...temperament being the 1st. Actually Paul, a loose lead SHOULD take the handler of the picture. But now you will see handlers who just keep up with the dogs, and run faster, and it becomes a speed contest, eliminating the purpose of the request. A loose lead, where the dog is at its best speed, doesn't mean a race. That's what we see in many cases. A faster dog, still downhill, still incorrect, followed by a faster handler. I agree with you, a true loosed lead is second only to temperament. I wish more people could recognize both.
