In a message dated 12/15/04 11:03:41 AM Pacific Standard Time,
I have a dumb question...I read most these posts(and I am not directing
this to anyone particularly)about improving American lines...adding things
to American lines..etc..How can one know where improvements need to be made
if one hasn't bred anything of exceptional quality with the lines they have
from this country???? In other words..if you only have mediocre American
dogs..and breed an import dog of fair quality to a mediocre American
bitch...how do you make improvements? I venture to say..the Germans
wouldn't prescribe to that breeding philosophy!!Americans do not have the
German mind set..Americans wouldn't do well with a breed warden..if
Americans had a breed warden..most wouldn't have the problems they
currently have..there would be no keeping mediocre dogs..there would be no
pampering and keeping dogs like humans..and dogs would be euthanized if
found to be unworthy..Many.American GSD breeders look for reasons to keep
dogs no matter how inferior and then want to make "improvements"..Germans
only keep the best..sell the half-assed good ones to foreigners...and put
down the rest...Breeding the GSD is Germany and most of Europe is a male
dominated business...there isn't allot of room for pampering, indulging,
and babying the dogs..plus it is a big business..the GSD is not the only
breed that has originated in Germany..but it is the most profitable. If the
German breeders were truly interested in the breed...and not the
profit..they would see that they could benefit form some of the progress we
in America have made in the breed..and would want to incorporate some of
our dogs into their lines..thus broadening their gene pool...C.Grainger
Christine: If American breeders are happy with what they are producing,
as many are, there isn't any need to add or change anything..
I most tell you that I don't think the Germans are 'dumping' off their bad
products to the USA.. The German importers here and those buying are not
stupid...
For the most part many are serious students of the German Bloodlines and
follow the Shows and Progeny Classes very carefully..
Many are able financially and are willing to step up and pay whatever they
ask..
and these Quality ones with excellent producing conformation bred
pedigrees are Many thousands of dollars.. It is not something that one buys
without
serious consideration. Believe Me!!!
Now the Euro is so far up againest the American Dollar that really affects
the purchase. I saw a very young bitch I wanted , but she was 15,000.00
EURO . ..A Male I was interested in, but even at eight years of age based
on his producing ability and quality of his progeny, he was 38,000.00 EURO..
...
So when Americans say the German's are dumping dogs on us, like a wholesale
cheap trick..That is not true. Shipping costs alone are very expensive getting
the Dogs from Germany or the other countries, into the USA.
Soon we will have the advantage of the Twice German Sieger Yasko vd
Farbenspeil standing at Stud for one year in this country. Many of us plan to
take
advantage of him in spite of his Stud fee being 1500.00 US dollars..or
possibly
more..
I appreciate those who have paid the price to bring these Shepherds to us..
We will use them..for our own reasons..
But you are right..These Shepherds are not for everyone, particularly those
who are not familiar with the bloodlines and the Shepherds in their pedigrees.
I believe only those who are outcross breeding with a thoughtful and
well-defined plan and purpose , should consider bringing in the outcross lines,
and no one should just run out and breed to one on a whim.
You need a plan and a long-range one with a well -defined direction of where
you are planning on going with the outcross progeny and their progeny... and
what is your ultimate goal.
